Abstract

Title:Rail profile safety gear
Abstract:
This thesis describes a railway car safety gear which should keep the car in place in the event that the tow cable breaks. We started by providing a theoretical description of the well-known forces on inclined planes and then proposed a solution for the problem at hand. We described well-established approaches related to elevator safety breaks and used them as the foundation of our search for a suitable railway car safety gear solution. The search was conducted methodically resulting a proposal of a solution. The final concept was evaluated with a finite element analysis, which was used to calculate the safety factor of the design \nu = 2,95, and we also demonstrated the influence of various factors on the braking force.

Keywords:safety gear, rail profile, wedge, forces on an inclined plane, elevators, finite element analysis
