In theoretical part of thesis are defined following concepts: rebus story (divided on text and picture), picture book and speech development of children aged from 1 to 3 years. There are also presented history of rebus stories abroad and in Slovenia as well as criteria for analysis of rebus stories. In empirical part of thesis are analyzed rebus stories from selected issues of magazines Ciciban and Cicido, according to criteria for analyzing themes and criteria for evaluating quality illustrations which I apply to illustrated pictograms in rebus stories.
In thesis I tried to find out what is the role of rebus stories in children’s speech development of children aged from 1 to 3 years and which rebus stories and which themes are appropriate for children aged from 1 to 3 years.
