Reading is the first step we in our childhood take towards the world of knowledge, literature, words. It helps us to connect with the world, provides a way to communicate and a possibility to attend cultural as well as educational and sports activities which take place in everyday life. The first step to developing a child%s reading abilities is to read aloud to them. The child will become familiar with the words and get motivated for reading. In the empirical part of my master thesis I was gathering information on the frequency of family reading, motivation for family reading and information on who provides the encouragement for family reading using two questionnaires and a reading diary. In addition, I studied possible obstacles which affect the frequency of family reading. Subjects of my study were students of the first triad in a chosen primary school (located in the Dolenjska region) and their families. The results of the study showed that the families which partook in the research are aware of the importance of family reading. However, due to lack of time, work responsibilities, and numerous extracurricular activities the children attend, they often struggle to find the time for family reading. Furthermore, library visits and independent reading of parents are scarce, which could have an impact on family reading. The collaborating families read three or four times per week for a time period of half an hour, mainly in the evenings.
