In Slovenia, there are more and more socially underprivileged children. Because of unemployment, inadequate social environment or a bad family situation parents are not able to take proper care of them. In many cases also the state forgets about the children. At this point, the non-governmental organizations play an important role, which continuously develop new and customized programs for its users. Because of their placement in the civil society, they more easily form the specific needs of individuals and population groups. With this research work I want to contribute to a better review of the functioning of various societies which deal with socially underprivileged children and implement programs for their better quality of life and easier integration into society. I will compare the activities of Slovenian societies with societies from other countries.
To create a master's thesis, I used descriptive method by studying domestic and foreign literature. I did a case study and interviews with the presidents or expert staff of three societies. I used a statistical method to analyze the phenomena and with graphs I tried to check their characteristics.
I found out that all societies are underfunded, which prevents them to help all children in need. A greater promotion of a society has a positive impact on the recognizability and consequently means higher inflows. All the societies use websites and social networks for their promotion. All societies also get help from many volunteers, especially at the Društvo prijateljev otrok Mavrica, where there are no employees.
The contents of the tasks will help the leadership of societies as an overview of the work of other societies and to obtain some new ideas. It is also intended for parents of children in need, donors, people, who want to become volunteers, etc.
