Abstract

Title:Analysis of acoustic properties of spaces to adapt them to a different purposes
Abstract:
Closed spaces are used for variety of different activities. Each activity requires specific acoustics, which is assessed with different acoustic parameters. Many different parameters have been established but they are all derived from the impulse response of sound traveling from the source to the measurement location. In order to determine which parameters must be optimised for a different intended purpose, they were measured in several rooms. The measurements of the impulse response were performed in classrooms, laboratory, church, hall, music studio and an anechoic room. Using a software package, parameters were calculated in accordance to recommendations given in international standards. Results of acoustic parameters show that some of the measure spaces have suitable acoustic arrangement, while the acoustics of the others is not appropriately designed and/or implemented and these spaces need renovation. While the auditorium for speech intelligibility should have shorter reverberation times, the auditorium for listening music should have reverberation time set according to the music genre. After comparing and analysing the premises and parameters, we found that the reverberation time remains the main parameter for evaluating room acoustics. However, subjective impression of acoustics remains important at the final stage of acoustic design of spaces.
