This thesis presents the course of planning and designing the mobile application Super Strings. Several elements are presented that are necessary to successfully plan and design a mobile application. Research is done into the short history and trends of mobile applications and the basics that must be known before work on planning and designing a mobile application can begin. The importance of the user experience and the application response time is looked into and what ties into perceived performance. Certain factors that need to be taken into consideration are touched upon as the application is optimized for the app stores. The importance of typography is pointed out, as well research into which font types are best for reading on the small screen of a mobile device and at what distance. Further research goes into what kind of luminosity contrast improves visibility and readability. Various colour schemes and how they are used are presented, as well as the importance of colour contrast. The conceptual design of the Super Strings application, which is meant for meditation, relaxation, better sleep is showcased, as is the way the application alludes to the Superstring space theory. The problems that appeared during the planning and design stages of the mobile application Super Strings are also pointed out. The mobile application Super Strings is compared to three other applications of the same type and the advantages and disadvantages are exposed. When planning the mobile application Super Strings, the goals of the application, who the target users are, as well as the content of the mobile application were all decided upon. The way the user experience looks like was planned and the functionality of the mobile application Super Strings was defined. In the design section, the choice of fonts, colours and background was also determined.
