Abstract

Title:France Kralj and Venice
Abstract:
France Kralj, the 'father of Slovene contemporary art', is a leading figure of the Slovenian expressionism and, later, the New Objectivity in Slovenia. In this thesis, we analyse one of his best known paintings, Remembering Venice, historically also referred to as my wife with a Venetian background. The painting was created in 1932 for the »Portrait of a woman in Slovenian modern art« art exhibition and is now part of the permanent collection of the Modern Gallery in Ljubljana. After describing the basic features of the painting, we proceed with the analysis of the form, beginning by determining the theme and continuing with the creation of physicality, creating space setting, figural composition, and, finally, a description of light and colour. An iconographic analysis follows the analysis of the form, analysing in detail the meaning and content of individual image elements and their interconnection. Then, iconological analysis was conducted, where the inspected artwork is set in the spatial and temporal context of its creation. Here, the life and work of the artist is presented, and the effect on the painting, both the subject and the execution. In the pedagogical section of this dissertation, the Ways In method by the Tate Gallery is introduced, explaining how the artwork can be introduced to students. A worksheet demonstrating the method is shown in the attachment.
