The Eco-Schools programme is an established international programme for environmental education, which is developing a responsible attitude towards the environment, nature and way of living. Its aim is to promote and raise awareness of sustainable development among children and youth at different stages of education. Faculty of Education in Ljubljana is participating in the Eco-Schools programme. In my thesis, I was trying to determine what is the students’ attitude towards the Eco-Schools project, how familiar they are with the activities, carried out as a part of the Eco-Schools programme, and what is their sustainable behaviour like. Data was gathered by anonymous questionnaire in a survey involving 83 students of Faculty of Education. The results have shown that the students have a positive attitude towards the activities carried out by the Eco-Schools programme, but wish it would be more recognizable. The students are more familiar with some and less with other activities carried out as a part of the Eco-Schools programme. My estimates are that the reason for this is that some of them are promoted more than others. They are most familiar with the activities related to the waste separation, energy conservation and reduction of paper towel use in the toilets. Signs that remind them to consistently switch off the lights and to economically use paper towels help them in being more environmentally aware. With the Eco-Schools programme, Faculty of Education in Ljubljana encourages both students and teachers to opt for sustainable behaviour. By behaving sustainably, the students, as future teachers, could serve as role models for their future pupils and students – they could direct them towards sustainable-oriented decisions and behaviour.
