This masters thesis treats differences between advanced and basic set-top-box IPTV receivers, and also compares both IPTV systems where compared set-top-boxes are operating. Set-top-box represents one of the most important component of IPTV system, since it enables user access to all IPTV services.
First of all, history of television is described, from the first TV implementation to the advanced TV system used this days. Differences between analog and digital television are explained, furthermore, digital television is broken in parts and detailed described. Described are some digital TV system, one of them is also IPTV, and important avdio and video codecs are listed.
In the IPTV part of the thesis, architecture elements of IPTV sistem from backend of IPTV provider to the users set-top-box are listed and described. IPTV backend consists of servers for interactive aplications, digital rights managment, user managment, video servers, ... On the other side, user end, residential gateway and set-top-box enables user access to access network, which is used for transport of interactive services data in linear TV. Interactive services are representing interactive aplications, video on demand, electronic program guide, IPTV internet browsing and other advanced services. Important part of IPTV is also protection of digital rights.
Architecture and functioning of IPTV sistem with advanced and basic set-top-boxes are described in detail. Differences between both systems and set-top-boxes are described, advantages and disadvantages listed.
In chapter 6 implementation description of IPTV system with advanced set-top-box technologies to IPTV system with basic set-top-boxes is provided. Technologies, that were used in assembly of united IPTV backed for both advanced and basic set-top-boxes, are listed and described more detailed. Architecture of this united IPTV system is presented, advantages listed and server operations optimization processes described.
