Abstract

Title:Migration and discrimination against migrants in Slovenian society and educational system
Abstract:
The main aim of this diploma thesis was multilayered. Firstly, we wanted to determine what prejudice are and where they originate from, what identity is and how stigmatized identity influences the immigrants. We were interested in the structure of migrants in Slovenia and how people migrate since the migration to Slovenia from the area of former Yugoslavia has been present for decades and the percentage of those migrants in Slovenia represents approximately 90 per cent of all migrants residing there. Further on we have focused on the society and how it is burdened with prejudice and stereotypes towards immigrants, on discrimination and intolerance towards immigrants and on the adaptation to the new environment. In this context we have researched what multicultural society means for the primary teacher. Among other things we have learned that the position of immigrants in Slovenia is not favourable because they face problems for which the Republic of Slovenia is responsible. Children of immigrants face problems in educational institutions as well. Therefore, we have found and described ways with which primary teachers can effectively organize their work in a multicultural classroom. Finally, we have analyzed a recent example of media presentation of an immigrant boy who was, due to his foreign nationality, mocked and physically assaulted. We have also examined the aspect of media coverage of the incident and discussed how media coverage influences on individuals and groups involved.
