The thesis addresses 100 Gbit/s optical transmission systems and how they work. First we will take a look at the current optical systems with optical fibers and wavelength-division multiplexing. Since the 100 Gbit/s systems use coherent detection and a modulated signal we will do a quick overview of the most popular digital modulations.
After that we can start with the 100 Gbit/s optical transmission systems, we will try to determine why we need them and what were the requirements for the optimal solution based on the structure and demands of current optical transmission systems. All this will help us understand the options, that were available for 100 Gbit/s optical transmission systems, the selected option and why that is the optimal one.
We will take a closer look at DP-QPSK, the selected modulation for 100 Gbit/s optical transmission systems. We will examine the structure of the transmitter and the receiver, the functions of the digital signal processor – DSP and the reasons for using forward error correction – FEC. At the end we will analyze the pros and cons of the 100 Gbit/s optical transmission systems solution and analyze the options for further increase of the bit rate on optical transmission systems. With so many exciting possibilities we can expect very dynamic development in the optical transmission systems, mostly dependent on the price performance of new technologies.
