This thesis describes satellite communication in Ka-band. First it portray satellite orbits in use. It represents a satellite and antenna assembly and Earth equipment needed to build a successful connection. It shortly describes frequency bands used in satellite communications and history of development and use of Ka-band. We look at how the antenna is directed to a satellite and how antenna tracking works, the route of a signal through the system to the transmitting Ka-band antenna as it is used in STN d.d. and how the transmit parameters are determined. It describes the most common use of Ka-band in satellite downlink. Also described are atmosphere and weather influences on Ka-band. It is shown with an experiment and calculations, how heating has an effect on an antenna and the transmitting signal.
