In this work we designed an automated system for automated time measurements for the purpose of training in wildwater kayak and canoe sport. The system executes time measurements and identifies individual athletes.
The main theme is communication technology based on infrared light, which we used to trigger time measurements and to transmit data. We used microcontroller technology to develop stopwatches, which are fixed on to boats, and phot cells, with which measurement events are triggered. We used programming language C and with the use of interrupts we fulfilled time critical requirements. Cyclic pulse distance codes were used to create a robust algorithm to recognise different types of light cells.
In the end the system was physically built an successfully tested on water.
