The basic purpose of the master's thesis is to determine the opinion of parents in Primorsko-Notranjska Region about school subject Sports. In the theoretical part, we identified the importance of physical and sports activities for the holistic development of a child, the importance of the family for the child's development and its impact on the child's attitude towards physical/sports activity, and the importance of school subject Sports as well as cooperation between school and parents.
The empirical survey included 409 parents from the Primorsko-Notranjska Region, whose children attended the first five grades of primary school. We tried to find out whether parents are given sufficient information on the performance, progress, achievements and possible difficulties of their child in the school subject Sports and what is their opinion on the implementation of this school subject (the number of lessons, assessment, cooperation of teachers, excusing pupils from the participation, offering additional sports activities).
Our research showed that teachers and parents never or rarely talk about cooperation, progress and possible problems of pupils in the subject Sports. Parents do not get information about what are the results of their child reached in the testing for Sports-Educational Card. We also ascertained that a large proportion of parents would like to receive more information about their child's participation in the school subject Sports.
Most parents believe that the number of lessons intended for the subject Sports is suitable and that the school offers enough additional sports activities in which pupils can engage voluntarily. More than half of the parents think that descriptive assessment is the most appropriate means of grading in the subject Sports, and almost half of the parents believe that Sports should be taught by a class teacher and sports teacher together.
Most parents never or rarely write an excuse for inaction in the subject Sports or at a school sports day. The most common reason for parents to write an excuse for their child from the participation is an injury. Almost all parents think that Sports is an important school subject, but they do not rank it among the three most important school subjects for the life of a child and later for an adult person.
