Extensive areas of steep slopes and uneven distribution of precipitation in Slovenia result in
a great number of watercourses which have torrential characteristics. That is why we are on
a daily basis encountering and trying to deal with problems which torrents are bringing into
built environment. Computer programs used for modeling of watercourses are based on
standard equations for analysing hydraulic conditions in lowland watercourses; they might
not give correct results in steep torriental watercourses. This graduation thesis focuses on
the issue of hydraulics of steep stream channels and the limitations when using classic
hydraulic equations and mathematical hydraulic models, such as Hec-Ras. In the practical
part, a specific section of the Hotoveljščica torrent is examined in terms of river-bed and
hydraulic conditions additionaly, erosion processes are analyzed. An outline plan for flood
protection measures ate the analyzed section of the Hotoveljščica torrent is proposed.
