Abstract
Uspeh so si ameriški ponudniki zagotovili s poznavanjem novih potreb trga, sledenju spremembam in inovativnostjo. In the thesis we explore the differences between the development of ebooks in Europe and that in the USA by analising the contents of online blogs and web portals targeted at publishing professionals. In 2007 Amazon caused a digital revolution in the literary world. Nevertheless, due to a growing demand for ebooks and Amazon's dominant position other influential booksellers also entered the market followed by companies that primarily did not work in the book field. At the moment, some of the most prominent online retailers are Barnes and Noble, Google, Apple, and Kobo. The market share of ebooks in the USA is growing apace, seriously jeopardising the printed book. Meanwhile in Europe there is no adequate business model which would be able to compete withthe established american model of selling ebooks. That is why the Americanand the European ebook market develop at different speeds. American ebook vendors have ensured their success by adressing the needs of their clients, adapting to changes and innovating. The main factors that have enabled the development of the market are: a wide selection of ebooks, accessibility of e-book readers and other reading gadgets, competition, inexpensive e-books and ebook readers, a pleasant shopping experience (a direct purchase via an e-book reader), an organised distribution, familiarity with the reader/consumer. Furthermore, metadata are being improved and new solutions concerning copyright contracts and DRM are being sought rapidly. Last but not least, an important reason for the delayed arrival of digital books in Europe is also a lack of financial sources. Namely, it is crucial to bear in mind that European markets are small, which makes considerable investments in the development of e-books simply not possible.
