The life of modern human beings is characterised by a frantic pace of daily engagements, accompanied by pleasant as well as unpleasant emotional states which can only be dealt with if a person is emotionally literate enough. If we want our children to become successful, healthy and contented adults, they need to be emotionally educated already in their very early childhood. The subject of my diploma thesis is the adequacy of picture books for the emotional literacy education of pre-school children. The thesis is divided into two parts: in the theoretical part, I started by defining the concept of emotions and their different types, described emotional processes and functions and finally showed how emotions are developed in pre-school children. Next, I defined the concepts of emotional literacy, emotional literacy education and picture books, which I then followed by the description of the significance of picture books as tools for emotional literacy education of pre-school children. In the empirical part of the thesis I examined selected picture books and established whether or not they were adequate to be used for the emotional literacy education of pre-school children. My research has shown that picture books are an excellent motivation for achieving emotional and mental progress of children.
