My master’s thesis researches the relationship between shape and colour in abstract art expression. The research problem is attended to by the help of theoretical and empirical research, and with three different approaches. The theoretical part analyses theoretical art problem of the relationship between colour and shape in abstract painting by the help of a descriptive method and by the help of studying the corresponding literature. All these will be done on the basis of findings of different authors who were also artists and art theorists: from the ‘’father of abstract painting’’ Vasilij Kandinski to Milan Butina, who was an artist and theorist, and the first one to systematically articulate the basic acknowledgments about art elements and the relationship between them. My findings will be supported by the ones of Anton Trstenjak from the field of psychology of colours. The two empirical parts of my thesis, based on the theoretical part, follow. With my author work I am going to create a series of digital abstract pictures and analyse them with the help of the method of the formal art analysis according to the theoretical basis with which I am going to verify my work. On the basis of the theoretical research I am going to formulate the relationship between the shape and colour in abstract art expression as a pedagogical problem, related to the curriculum for secondary schools educating the future staff for preschool education with the content of the two modules I teach: Art Expression and Creative Expression. I am going to make an action survey in the form of three four hour presentations with the group of thirty students. The relationship between shape and colour is one of the key issues with which many of the art masters were trying to deal. The issue was not often researched in an artistic theory field and especially not in the field of art pedagogic. Thus my research is going to contribute to the development of art theory and art didactics in this field. It is going to be the basis of my writing a handbook of art expressions for preschool education dedicated to internal use. The art works of the students, which are going to be created during the process, are going to be exhibited at the end of education course with the aim to enrich the cultural life of all the programme’s participants and also of the people living locally.
