A stand type (site unit, forest type, ecosystem unit) is a tool of forest management planning in a management unit and district. Criteria for the formation of stand types are determined according to planning phases, including site conditions, stand structure, and forest management objectives. They are discussed in detail. The importance of proper use of vegetation maps is underlined. Some pragmatic suggestions for the formation of stand types are presented. Well-formed stand types contribute to a better quality of the whole planning process. The quality of a plan is (also) measured by its applicability.
