Izvleček
In this essay we focus on a European region that puzzles the uninformed observer with its huge diversity. This is South-Eastern Europe (SEE), also referred to as the Balkan Peninsula or simply the Balkans. Definitions seem clear in geography textbooks, yet it is not easy to outline the region in cultural and political terms. It is not difficult to realize that diverse contexts have also influenced the huge diversity seen in the region’s higher education systems. After sketching a historical background, analysis of the contemporary trends in higher education systems is the main focus of this paper.
