This thesis contains the seismic analysis of the Golnik castle and the comparative study of strengthening measures to increase the seismic resistance of the investigated structure. In the introduction chronological description of the development of the building is presented, followed by description of the building design and the condition of the structural elements based solely on visual inspection.
In the theoretical part, the performance of the masonry buildings during the seismic action and characteristic masonry failure modes are briefly introduced. The assessment of the seismic resistance according to the Eurocode 8-3 standard for the existing masonry buildings follows. A comprehensive set of retrofitting and strengthening measures for the improvement of the seismic performance is presented and explained. The seismic analysis was made by 3Muri programme – a software for non-linear seismic analysis of existing and new masonry buildings. The thesis also contains a brief description of the programme and brief explanation of the simplified N2 method.
In the empirical part, the seismic analysis of the structure in existing state was made and it served as a reference for the comparative study later on. Models with different strengthening measures were analysed, as for example incorporation of the tie rods, substitution of the flexible wooden floors with the rigid ones, strengthening of masonry with jacketting, grout injections and FRP stripes as well as strengthening of the building with introduction of reinforced concrete frames. Each measure was chosen on the basis of the preliminary analysis study and according to the anticipation of the possible structure response.
According to the results of the analysis, main problem is irregular layout of the structure, since the irregular wall distribution in the ground plan causes an explicitly harmful response on the seismic load (torsion twist). The results also indicate that contemporary standard demands for seismic safety can be achieved with various strengthening measures; however, the appropriate building response can only be attained by introducing the reinforced concrete frames in the SW part of the castle.
