Building information modeling or BIM is a modern and effective approach to the design of facilities. BIM enables design and managing of facilities from conceptual design to demolishing or repair. In my graduation thesis I wanted to present advantages of BIM approach in a design phase architecture-detailing-analysis. I presented it on an example of a project of a four-storey residential building in Izola with load-bearing structure made out of reinforced concrete.
I have been using BIM programs Graphisoft ArchiCAD and Tekla Structures. I designed an architectural model from architectural plans with program AchiCAD, which is primarily developed for architects, and imported it into a structural program Tekla Structures as a reference model in IFC format (Industry Foundation Classes). I also used this program for detailing and design of a structural model. In my case, detailing meant definition of material characteristics and modeling of a steel reinforcement in load-bearing concrete elements. At the end I designed a computational model of a part of a structure and exported it into an analytical program SAP2000 in which I performed a static analysis for load cases from Eurocode standards. I also displayed the simplicity of changing dimension of elements in a structural model and immediate influence of that on a modal analysis.
