The purpose of this thesis was to research the development of tourism in rather inaccessible countryside of the Slovenian Alpine region. A wider research area of Upper Soča Valley, namely parts of the municipalities of Tolmin and Kobarid were chosen. The village Vrsno in the municipality of Kobarid was selected as a main area of the research. In the theoretical part, the rural area and the development of tourism as well with its positive and negative effects on the area are described. The idea of sustainable development, on which also sustainable tourism is based, was introduced. Moreover, legal framework of the management of the Alpine area was researched. In the application part the possibility of the development of a “albergo diffuso” hotel in the chosen area was discussed. We visited the area and closely examined it as well as made spatial analyses (the use of the surface, visual analysis, the analysis of purpose and the good condition of the buildings etc.). Based on this examination it was established that the place is suitable as a test example for the installation of a spread hotel. Fourteen suitable objects were selected, from which four were later eliminated. The remaining ten objects seemed to be appropriate for the development of a spread hotel that presents a considerable potential for the development and the preservation of the settlement in the future.
