Drawing on the ideas in Mlinar's book (2008), the author presents his own thoughts on problems such as the crisis of growth and of capitalism, sustainable growth and sustainable development, the limits of global growth and of the local growth of the Slovenian town of Koper, freedom and restrictions on it, alternatives and compromises, the unity of diversity and its significance for the theoretical perception of reality and democratic decision-making. The last mentioned issue plays an important role in Mlinar's understanding of globalisation and its relation to localness and the individualisation process. Accordingly, for Mlinar the problems faced by the town of Koper have many features characteristic of global problems. Mlinar does not belong to the group of uncritical globalisation enthusiasts. The fundamental concept that underlies his book suggests that the town Koper reflects the problems of the world and vice versa.
