Abstract

Abstract:
The paper addresses the tabloidization debate but from a different perspective than dominant approaches which narrowly connect tabloidization with commercialization. The author analyses commentaries on and interviews about journalism in the serious press and tries to show how boundaries between journalism and non-journalism or good and bad (i.e. yellow) journalism are defined through these discussions and how journalistic authority is established. He argues that the question of journalistic authority is neglected in the prevailing accounts of journalism and tries to show how the "yellow threat" is used as a rhetorical ritual for maintaining and repairing the dominant, objectivistic journalistic paradigm. The analysis reveals various strategies through which serious journalism tries to differentiate itself from the tabloid press, such as emphasizing epistemological and methodological differences between the two kinds of journalism and ritual isolation of individuals who break the rules.
