The digitalization of business processes in higher education has primarily focused on supporting core activities, while support and managerial processes are still often carried out using disconnected digital tools. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to contribute to the more efficient and effective execution of support business processes in higher education through the application of Business Process Management (BPM) principles. As a case study, the thesis examines the process of submitting proposals for consideration at the senate meetings of a member of the University of Ljubljana.
The research is based on Business Process Management as a methodological framework for the analysis, redesign, and digitalization of business processes. The methodology includes a literature review, an analysis of the existing process and relevant regulations, a survey conducted among representatives of the secretariats of the University of Ljubljana members, as well as functional requirements analysis and data modelling. Based on these activities, a process-oriented information system solution was designed and implemented in the form of a functional prototype.
The findings indicate that the analysed process is only partially digitalized and relies mainly on e-mail and general office software. Based on the analysis, functional requirements were identified, a data model was designed, and a prototype was developed to support the entire process lifecycle, from proposal submission to the archiving of completed cases.
Methodologically, the thesis demonstrates the potential application of Business Process Management (BPM) in the analysis, redesign, and digitalization of support processes in higher education. From a practical perspective, it presents a developed prototype of an information system solution that may serve as a foundation for the development of a production information system and for the digitalization of similar support processes in higher education institutions.
