Abstract

Title:The Originary Undefinedness of Man; Technics in the Philosophy of Bernard Stiegler
Abstract:
The purpose of our thesis is to present technology and humanity in a relation of co-constitution. Through the work of Bernard Stiegler, we address the problem of situating technology at the origin of the human and attempt to follow his thesis that the comes into being only through technology and that we cannot conceive of humanity without technology. We first demonstrate this through Stiegler's analysis of Rousseau's state of nature, which is a pre-technical state, and then through an examination of Leroi-Gourhan's theory of humanization, which serves as the basis for discussing the concept of epiphylogenetic memory, the external memory, from which arises the relationship to time and death. We then demonstrate that man is a being of lack and that he is essentially outside of himself, whereby technology proves not to be a substitute, but rather his external essence. Finally we touch upon Heidegger's analysis of temporality of Dasein, which Stiegler attempts to ground in a relationship to technicity, which is here thought as facticity.
