This bachelor’s thesis examines the cultural heritage of brickmaking in Bilje and its visual interpretation through documentary illustration. The aim of the thesis is to develop a series of illustrations depicting the traditional brickmaking process in the Bilje brickworks at the beginning of the 20th century, when production still largely relied on manual labour. The illustrations serve as the basis for the creation of a ceramic relief intended for installation in a public space in the village, which will be produced by the Bilje Ceramics Society (Društvo keramikov Bilje)
The theoretical part examines the historical development of brickmaking in Bilje, its significance for the local community, and the role of cultural, technical, and industrial heritage in preserving historical memory. It also presents illustration as a medium of visual communication, with an emphasis on documentary and educational illustration.
The practical part includes research into historical sources, analysis of photographic material, and the development of a series of linear illustrations adapted for execution in relief technique. The final result is a comprehensive visual representation of the traditional brickmaking process, contributing to the documentation, interpretation, and preservation of local cultural heritage.
