Abstract

Title:Student Palace - Conceptual Design of the New Building for the University of Ljubljana at Erjavčeva cesta 23
Abstract:
The University of Ljubljana is one of the key institutions of education and research in Slovenia. However, its spatial dispersion reduces the visibility of the university’s identity and limits opportunities for spontaneous interaction among students. Existing university spaces primarily support formal education, while there is a lack of spaces for informal learning, socialising, collaboration, and everyday student life. This master’s thesis proposes a conceptual design for a new Student Palace on Erjavčeva Street in Ljubljana, conceived as an open social infrastructure for the University of Ljubljana. The project reinterprets the historical typology of the palace and transforms it into an accessible and inclusive public space intended for students, the university, and the city. The building brings together programmes for informal learning, work, social interaction, cultural activities, and support services, thereby extending beyond the role of a conventional university building. The architectural design is based on an open public ground floor, a multifunctional central hall, a vertical landmark, and a connecting ramp, which together create a continuous spatial sequence of diverse environments. The flexible organisation allows the building to adapt to the changing needs of its users while encouraging social interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration. The proposed design establishes a contemporary university space that connects education, everyday life, and public space, while creating a new centre of identity for the University of Ljubljana.
