We analyzed 27 fecal samples from red pandas and two mixed tissue samples from deceased red pandas from European zoos that tested positive for RpAPV by PCR. Using NGS and Sanger sequencing, we successfully assembled five complete and 19 partial RpAPV genomes. Using the MEGA12 software, we performed a phylogenetic analysis, which determined that each genome belongs to the species Amdoparvovirus carnivoran 5, yet together they form a distinct phylogenetic lineage within this species. We were unable to isolate the virus on cell lines. Using NGS, we determined the presence and abundance of viral families in red panda feces. The results indicate the dominant presence of four phage families (Herelleriviridae, Myoviridae, Podoviridae, Siphoviridae) and four families of mammalian viruses (Circoviridae, Picobirnaviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Parvoviridae), which is consistent with the results of previous studies of the red panda fecal virome and microbiome.
