Refugees are often exposed to numerous traumatic experiences before migration, during the
migration process, and after arriving in a new environment, all of which can significantly affect
their mental health. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play an important role in
providing support and assistance to this population and are often among the first points of
contact refugees have with support systems. In my bachelor's thesis, I explored the role of
professional workers employed in non-governmental organizations who work with refugees,
with a particular focus on support in the field of mental health. The theoretical section first
defines migration, refugees, and non-governmental organizations and presents their role in the
field of mental health. It then focuses on refugee mental health, risk factors for psychological
distress, the impact of traumatic experiences and post-migration stressors. Finally, the
theoretical framework addresses the importance of psychosocial support. significance of
intercultural communication, the use of interpreters, culturally sensitive practice, and the issue
of structural racism and its impact on the everyday lives of refugees. Following a review of the
literature, a qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with five
professional workers employed in non-governmental organizations that provide support to
refugees in Slovenia. The findings indicate that these professionals play a crucial role in
supporting refugees’ mental health. Their work extends beyond direct assistance with mental
health difficulties and also includes support with integration, access to various services,
employment, administrative procedures, accompaniment to institutions, and advocacy. The
study further finds that NGOs make an important contribution to reducing social exclusion and
discrimination. At the same time, professional workers face numerous challenges in their work,
including language barriers, structural racism, limited access to mental health services, and a
lack of systemic support.
