Abstract

Title:Maintaining high-quality bedding in the fattening of broiler chicken : B. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
The bachelor’s thesis addresses the importance of maintaining high-quality bedding in the fattening of broiler chickens and its impact on housing conditions, animal health, and welfare. Bedding represents an important part of the microclimatic system in the poultry house, as it influences moisture regulation, gas concentrations - particularly ammonia - and the overall hygiene of the environment. The key indicator of bedding quality is its moisture content, which should be maintained between 20 and 25%, as higher values lead to material compaction, increased microbial activity, and deterioration of rearing conditions. The thesis analyzes the physical, chemical, and biological properties of bedding, as well as the factors affecting them, such as microclimate, watering systems, animal nutrition, and stocking density. Special emphasis is placed on different types of bedding materials, among which wood shavings stand out as the most commonly used and effective option, although alternative materials can also provide comparable results when properly managed. The literature review shows that bedding quality has a direct impact on the occurrence of health problems, such as footpad dermatitis and respiratory diseases, as well as on production performance. Wet and microbiologically contaminated bedding increases the risk of disease and reduces animal welfare. The thesis emphasizes that maintaining bedding quality is only possible through a holistic approach that includes coordinated management of all key production factors. Such an approach contributes to improved production results, better animal welfare, and reduced environmental impacts of poultry production.
