Abstract

Title:Cultural-linguistic aspects of German magazine advertisements and their didactic potential for developing foreign language competence : research data underlying the doctoral dissertation
Abstract:
This data release was produced as part of a PhD thesis in the field of foreign language didactics, which examines the didactic potential of printed magazine advertisements for developing pupils’ foreign language skills in the classroom, and includes research data from four complementary studies. It comprises: i) tables used to systematically analyse the corpus of advertisements from the German editions of National Geographic and Deutsch perfekt (2021–2023) in terms of language and subject matter; ii) an analytical protocol used to analyse the advertisements and related tasks or learning activities in 23 approved German textbooks for general secondary education, including a synthesis of the results; iii) a survey questionnaire and the results of the survey, which assessed the views of Slovenian grammar school German teachers on the integration of advertisements into lessons and examples of good practice; iv) documentation and research instruments, together with a synthesis of the results from the pedagogical quasi-experiment (observation form, self-assessment form for pupils, pre-test and post-test, and transcripts of interviews with the two teachers who conducted the experiment). This data enables researchers to design further extension studies, whilst providing grammar school foreign language teachers with a basis for independent action research into their own teaching, including teaching interventions based on print advertisements.
