Introduction: Women with autism spectrum disorder may face various sensory, communication, physical and emotional challenges during the perinatal period. Childbirth and the postnatal period involve numerous unpredictable situations, intense bodily sensations and exposure to sensory stimuli in the healthcare environment, which may affect women’s sense of safety, control and ability to manage the situation. Purpose: The purpose of this diploma work is to explore the experiences of women with autism spectrum disorder and their perception of the sensory environment during childbirth and in the postnatal period, to examine their perception of bodily experiences, and to identify the challenges they face during this period. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted. Data were collected through four semi-structured interviews with adult women with a diagnosed autism spectrum disorder or suspected autism spectrum disorder who had given birth. The sample was purposive. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and anonymised. The obtained data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results are presented in four thematic sections: childbirth, the postnatal period, communication and the relationship with healthcare professionals, and suggestions for improving the childbirth experience. Participants often described the childbirth environment as sensory-intensive and overwhelming. They identified light, sounds, touch, medical procedures, sense of control, predictability, the presence of a partner and the communication style of healthcare professionals as important factors in the childbirth experience. In the postnatal period, they emphasised the importance of physical recovery, breastfeeding, coping with lack of sleep, infant crying and physical contact, as well as the need for gradual learning of newborn care. In relation to healthcare professionals, they highlighted clear communication, explanation of procedures, patience, respectful attitude and consideration of individual sensory needs as important. Suggestions for improving the childbirth experience included reducing sensory overload, announcing procedures in advance, limiting unnecessary touch, enabling the presence of a support person and providing more individualised care. Discussion and conclusion: The findings indicate that the childbirth and postnatal experiences of women with autism spectrum disorder are not determined only by the medical course of childbirth, but also by the sensory environment, clarity of the information provided, the attitude of healthcare professionals and the possibility of individual adaptations. Sensory-adapted, predictable and respectful care may contribute to a greater sense of safety and reduced burden among women. Interprofessional collaboration, including midwifery and occupational therapy, is also important in this context.
