During the preschool period, there are significant quantitative and qualitative changes in vocabulary development, which children begin to acquire rapidly during infancy, toddlerhood, and early childhood. This is crucial for children's language abilities and early literacy. The preschool teacher's role is to provide children in kindergarten with equal opportunities for literacy development. It is important to know each child's level of literacy to plan of activities that promote literacy effectively.
In my diploma thesis, I examined the role of preschool teachers in promoting children's literacy. In the theoretical section, I defined the key concepts underpinning my thesis. I first focused on the milestones of speech and language development. I then defined literacy, its aspects and models, and presented its significance in various documents. I highlighted emerging literacy, which is particularly important in the preschool period. The empirical section is based on descriptive and causal non-experimental research. I designed a questionnaire on the role of preschool teachers in promoting children's literacy, which was completed by 106 preschool teachers.
The research showed that most surveyed preschool teachers promote children's literacy in kindergarten. They use various methods to develop literacy, most commonly incorporating books into daily routines such as the morning circle and before rest. They identified many benefits of this activity, including calming children, expanding vocabulary, training concentration, and stimulating imagination.
