Abstract

Title:Conceptual design of the adaptive reuse of the old school building and public square in Materija: architecture as a tool for the community
Abstract:
Changes in rural lifestyles over recent decades have significantly influenced the use and meaning of public space. Processes of individualization, increased mobility of residents, and the everyday travel to nearby centers and larger cities have gradually weakened traditional forms of social life in villages. As a result, the habits, interests, and needs of local residents are changing, and public space is often losing its connective and social role. The master’s thesis addresses public space in a rural context through the case study of the village of Materija, where, despite a fragmented daily life, a unifying element still exists—the volunteer fire brigade. While it functions as the central social core of the village, not all residents are involved in this association, which means that part of the community remains excluded from active public life. The thesis is based on the identified problem of the loss of the village’s central focal point, which in the past had a key spatial, social, and symbolic role—the Rovna Square. Today, this location is neglected and in poor physical and social condition, which negatively affects the identity of the village and its perception. At the same time, the site represents the main entrance point to the village, thus forming the first spatial experience for both visitors and residents. The aim of the master’s thesis is to identify the potential of this historically significant location in collaboration with local residents and to develop an architectural and spatial renovation concept “with people, for people.” The proposed solution seeks to re-establish the public space as an open, inclusive, and recognizable focal point of the village. It is based on an understanding of the local context, history, and contemporary needs of rural residents, and aims to strengthen social life, a sense of belonging, and the long-term identity of the place.
