In this master's thesis, we discuss the conservation and restoration work on a fragment of the Emona wall painting from the Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana (MGML).
The aim of the thesis was to independently conduct the conservation and restoration work and mount the fragment on a new, light, but sufficiently strong support, so that the fragment of the wall painting will be visible, and compatible and removable materials will be used.
At the beginning of the thesis, we present the history of the fragment and its original location in Emona's insula XVII, in room III. The circumstances that led to the consideration in this thesis and a description of the condition of the fragment before the work started. We continue with a description of the conservation and restoration procedures. The initially unknown motif of the wall painting fragment appears in the middle of the work and surprises with its well-preserved pictorial layer. Special attention is paid to the making of a new support for the fragment, which must bear a lot of weight and at the same time be sufficiently light. The making of a new support involves researching and testing materials, methods of construction, and combining varied materials into a whole.
