Abstract

TITLE: The economy of love and marriage in Slovenian prose of the 19th century / SUMMARY: The idea that marriage should be based on the spiritual and intellectual virtues – and the personal beauty – of the future partner, as well as the belief that partner selection should be a matter of individual choice, emerged among the bourgeoisie in the 18th century. However, in the Slovenian countryside, the motives for marriage remained primarily economic until the first third of the 20th century: marriages were not unions of soulmates but of two rural estates of equal wealth. Parents would not allow a poor farmer or farmer’s daughter to marry a wealthy partner solely out of love, and young couples generally submitted to their parents’ wishes. The most prominent Slovenian writers of rural origin, e.g. Josip Jurčič, Josip Stritar and Ivan Tavčar, depicted a different reality in some of their early prose works from the 1860s to the early 1880s. They described conflicts between rural parents and their children, who wished to marry poorer partners for love. This means that writers attributed to rural youth the bourgeois model of the right to marry for love, which was, in reality, very rare. / KEY WORDS: Slovene literature, rural novel, romantic love, bourgeoisie, 19th century

Title:Ekonomija ljubezni in poroke v slovenski prozi 19. stoletja
Abstract:
The idea that marriage should be based on the spiritual and intellectual virtues – and the personal beauty – of the future partner, as well as the belief that partner selection should be a matter of individual choice, emerged among the bourgeoisie in the 18th century.
