The paper will use a sample comparison of the authorial and editorial changes to the printed and handwritten poems by Valentin Vodnik to address the editorial interventions at all the language levels in the newer editions of Pesmi za pokušino (Poems for Sampling) (1806; 1869, 1891) and in the new print of Cigler's tale Sreča v nesreči (A Blessing in Disguise) (1836, 1882). It will present the linguistic changes between the provincial and general Slovene literary language in the 19th century and define various approaches to language modernisation in poetry and prose.
