Introduction: Listeriosis is one of the most serious and severe foodborne diseases caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is widespread across the globe and can occur sporadically or inoutbreaks linked to contaminated food. The disease is among the leading causes of many complications during pregnancy, such asspontaneous abortion , premature birth and stillbirth. Purpose: The main purpose of this diploma work is to gather important and currently known information and doctrines about the causative agent, Listeria monocytogens, and the disease it caused, listeriosis. Methods: We used data obtined through a review and analysis of the literature, applying a descriptive research method. The literature was sourced from detabasese including PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Cochrane and ScienceDirect. The data were searched using the folowing keywords: Listeria monocytogenes, listeriosis in pregnancy. Results: In this thesis, based on eight studies, we explored the impact of risk factors on pregnancy outcomes and the awereness od pregnant women about Listeria monocytogenes infection. Althought the incidence of listeriosis is low in Slovenia and the EU, the diseases poses a serious risk to vulnerable groups, especially pregnant women and newborns, as it can lead to spontaneous miscarriages, preterm births, or neonatal deaths. We found that pregnant women are significantly more susceptible to infection, while awareness and access to preventive information vary between countries. Therefore, we believe that key measures include improved education, early disease detection, and effective food safety practices to reduce the risk of serious pregnancy complicaations. Discussion and conclusion: In our thesis, we found that listeriosis during pregnancy poses a serious risk despite its low incidence. Prevention, awareness, and early detection are crucial. We emphasize the need for better education of pregnant women about safe nutrion.
