In my diploma thesis, I discuss the knowledge of word formation among high school
students. Word formation is one of the areas of linguistics that often causes problems for
students. The reasons for this are various. There is often a lot of material and it must be
processed in a short time, which makes it difficult to discuss it in depth.
In the theoretical part, I defined word formation and presented the structure and types of
formations, along with the main word formation terminology (syntactic basis, word
formation basis and affix), as stated by Ada Vidovič Muha according to the formation
transformation method. For the mentioned terms, I also checked how they are listed in the
textbook with exercises SLOVENŠČINA 4, Moč jezika, and how word formation is
represented in the curriculum for high schools.
In the practical part, I tried to determine through analysis how well high school students
solve word formation tasks, in which cases or tasks they had problems and what are the
reasons for poorer solving of certain tasks. To obtain the results, I prepared a word
formation test consisting of five tasks. I tested the distinction between formed and
unformed words, determining the word-forming base and word-forming affixes, forming
the syntactic/speech base, writing of affixes with a certain affix, and writing of affixes
from a syntactic base.
