Abstract
Demand for egalitarian public instruction, from its beginnings, has been seen not as a means of reduction or eradication of social inequalities but rather as a means of social reproduction. Almost no one had any doubt in the belief that children from lower classes of society should do worst than the ones from upper classes. The “natural order” should be in favour of such a state of affaires.
