In the master's thesis we presented peasants’ uprisings in Slovenia in the period from the 15th to the 18th century. Due to the large number of revolts in Slovenia and their time span, we focused on the five largest or most important ones in Slovenia.
In 2023, we commemorated the 450th anniversary of the best organized peasants’ revolt on Slovenian territory called the Croatian-Slovenian Peasant Revolt. For that reason we presented some events that had been organized as part of the above mentioned anniversary.
In the theoretical part, we historically presented this important period of Slovenian history and examined how this content should be treated in primary schools in relation to the curriculum. The empirical part is divided into three separate parts.
In the first part, we analysed the survey fulfilled by primary school teachers who teach subject called Družba in 5th grade, for which the closest English translation would be Social Studies, and History teachers who teach History, both on primary level of Slovenian educational system. We found out how they value the representation and presentation of peasants’ revolts in students’ textbooks in the fifth and the eighth grade. We explored how peasants’ revolts are taught and what influences their choice of the elective topic of peasants’ revolts in Slovenia.
In the second part, we made an analysis of the approved students’ textbooks for the subject called Družba in 5th grade. We were examining how peasants’ revolts are presented in those textbooks.
The last part is a lesson plan for the topic of peasants’ revolts. It consists of material for two lessons in the fifth grade of primary school at Social Studies and it also includes the evaluation of this lesson plan used in the class.
The aims of the master's thesis were to find out how the historical topic of peasants’ revolts is taught in Slovenia and to try to present this important topic to fifth graders in an interesting and understandable way.
