Reading is an activity that develops throughout life and is one of the factors that contribute to the ability to communicate. In my dissertation, I defined the importance of reading and reading competence for the individual. I also described communicative competence, focussing on reading competence. In the empirical part, I analysed the development of reading culture among students at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana. I also found out how many of them read for fun and what the relationship is between reading for fun and reading for knowledge. I also wanted to know whether the choice of texts available to students for leisure reading varies depending on the chosen field of study. The data was collected using a questionnaire. 100 students from six different study programmes at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana took part in the survey. The results showed, among other things, that the students have a relatively well-developed reading culture, that they prefer to read prose rather than poetry and that there is a clear difference between men and women in their choice of leisure literature.
