In my master's thesis, I present the field of medical cannabis in Slovenia in comparison with some other European countries. Since 2014, Slovenia has allowed the use of medicines containing cannabinoids. These medicines can only be prescribed by doctors to patients suffering from diseases for which such treatments have been proven effective.
In my thesis, I focused primarily on the circumstances under which public debate on the legalization of medical cannabis or cannabis in general, began in Slovenia, the arguments underlying the regulation of medical cannabis use in Slovenia, and the group of European countries Slovenia falls into in terms of cannabis regulation. I analysed the attitude towards cannabis use in Slovenia, focusing mainly on the arguments public health policies use to support or oppose the legalization of cannabis.
While writing my thesis, Slovenia also held two referendums on the use of cannabis. The first referendum question concerned the allowance of cannabis cultivation and processing of medical purposes on Slovenian territory, while the second addressed the cultivation and possession of cannabis for limited personal use within Slovenian territory.
