The Slovenian missionary history knows many individuals who while realizing their primary mission exceeded as defenders and promotors of the ethnic values of peoples where they worked. Even though their original job was a religious one they did not limit to it. Respecting their originality, they approached peoples in a holistic way considering all their needs and all aspects of their lives. Depending on the actual political circumstances, they lived with peoples and for them. Practical needs of their communities dictated their decisions. Missionaries were engaged for a higher standard of living and for a better education, for the basic health services, and for a deeper solidarity among peoples as well as for the immediate help to those most in need. Among the Slovenian missionaries working in China in the 20th Century the example of Andrej Majcen, who worked in China from 1935 up to his expulsion in 1951, is presented.
