This thesis tackles the gradual evolution of literary language in Croatian and Serbian speaking territories in the 18th century from a linguistic and historical perspective. The historical perspective of this thesis outlines a general historical context of Croatian and Serbian speaking lands in the 18th century, while the linguistical perspective describes the characteristics and the development of literary language in that same period. The emergence of modern nationalist movements in the second half of the 18th century, more specifically in the age of Enlightenment, simultaneously influences the linguistic development.
