Since the independence of the Republic of Slovenia in 1991, the country found itself in an anarchic international environment as an independent actor for the first time in its history. Based on geostrategic and geopolitical realities and in accordance with national interests, the newly independent country quickly realized that it could not guarantee a high level of security and prosperity for its own citizens alone, and therefore, quickly after its independence, it decided to join international organizations that dominate the European continent, such as the European Union and NATO. In my master’s thesis I analyzed the history and national interest of the Republic of Slovenia, key indicators of state power (geographical location, military strength, economy and demographics), and then placed the Republic of Slovenia in the broader security environment in which it is situated.
