Abstract
Naloga predstavi boljše prakse: ohranjanje in oživitev industrijske arhitekturne dediščine kompleksa Univerzale; krožni model gradnje z obravnavo obstoječih struktur in ponovno uporabo gradbenih elementov; program tekstilnega središča kot alternativno delovanje tekstilne industrije v razvitem svetu. Naloga najprej predlaga okvirno urbano ureditev središča Domžal: vsebinsko in oblikovno dopolnitev degradiranega odprtega prostora in vključitev oživljenega kompleksa Univerzale. Zasnova omogoča stik obiskovalca s procesom proizvodnje in javnost vključi v krožno tekstilno dejavnost.

Title:
Univerzale: textile (re)manufactory – Conceptual Design of the Renovation of the Industrial Architectural Heritage of the Univerzale Factory In Domžale into a Textile Hub
Abstract:
The industrial architectural heritage – more specifically the complex of the former straw hat and textile factory of Univerzale Domžale – is nowadays inappropriately treated and abandoned, its revitalisation potential and new role are neglected. Construction, with its exploitation of natural resources and production of construction waste, is environmentally burdensome and in the long term unsustainable. The textile industry, with its linear modus operandi, generates a negative environmental and social impact. The thesis is based on these three issues. It identifies the parallels and intersections between them and attempts to address them in a mutually resolving way. The thesis introduces better practices: the preservation and revitalisation of the industrial architectural heritage of Univerzale; the circular building model of taking existing structures and reusing their elements; and the textile hub programme as an alternative to the textile industry in the developed world. Firstly, the thesis proposes a rough urban layout for the urban centre of Domžale: complementing the degraded open space in both content and design and integrating the revitalised Univerzale complex. The renovation of the complex is based on a comprehensive treatment and evaluation of the architectural heritage. The concept of the textile centre realises the objectives of preserving the architectural heritage through different treatment methods, the circular practice of construction: through the dismantling of existing buildings, the documentation and design of a database of elements, and the implementation of a circular sustainable textile practice. The Textile Hub is a combination of boutique production content with garment processing, an educational and research component and a public (textile) programme. The design allows the visitor to get close to the production process and engages the public in the process of circular textile production. The integration of straw hat making preserves the heritage and the identity of Domžale. A major element of the design is the pathway, which physically and conceptually connects the content and leads the visitor through the textile centre. By applying the circular building model to the abandoned architectural heritage of the Univerzale factory and by including sustainable textile production, the task addresses the three issues in an analogous way. It asks questions about global problems, but answers them in a specific way within the local context of Domžale.
