The ageing of the population in Slovenia and around the world further underlines how crucial it is for people to have adequate living conditions in their later years of life. This demographic trend is putting public institutional care under great pressure, with demand for care homes outpacing the supply of available facilities, and with the number of applications increasing each year. As a consequence, older individuals have to choose their care homes carefully on the basis of various factors and available options. The aim of this master thesis was to investigate the factors influencing the choice of a particular care home and to identify which institutional care services are most important to them. Understanding these factors is crucial to ensure that older people are satisfied with their living conditions in care homes. According to the survey, the safety of the facility, the cleanliness and tidiness of the facility and the quality of the relationship between staff and residents are the three most important factors for older people when choosing a particular care home. In addition, services such as cleanliness, diligence, friendliness and responsibility of the staff and the presence of medical staff in the home are highly valued by the elderly. By identifying these key factors, the master thesis provides insights that can help to improve the quality of life of older people in institutional care, and therefore eliminate the negative stigma associated with care homes.
